by on 27/03/10 at 4:00 pm

In the Russian System black develops his knights and then puts pressure on black's d5 pawn. This practically forces black to give up his d-pawn in exchange for whites c-pawn. In exchange, white's queen will often be misplaced on c4 and black will aim to prove that. The Russian System is probably the system that you will see most often so if wish to play the Gruenfeld then it is advisable that you study this variation.
